How to become a Line electrician

You can become a line electrician without a degree — vocational training is the standard route in the UK. The work means installing, repairing and maintaining overhead and underground power lines, so safety is the top priority. You'll need an electrical NVQ Level 3 and the 18th Edition (BS 7671) wiring regulations qualification, plus a CSCS card for site access; live-line work also requires specific safety authorisation.

The fastest route is an apprenticeship with a network operator or contractor, or an FE college course leading to an electrical NVQ Level 3. Get your 18th Edition qualification and CSCS card, then build authorisation and seniority with experience.
