How to become a driller

You can become a driller in the UK without a degree — what matters is operating drilling rigs safely and to instruction. The fastest route is an apprenticeship or learning on the job as a driller's mate. To work on a construction or utilities site you'll need a CSCS card, and plant competence is shown through an NPORS or CPCS card.

1. Apprenticeship or learning on the job

The quickest realistic route. Start as a driller's mate or apprentice with a drilling, water-well or ground-investigation employer and learn the rig, drilling techniques and site safety on the job. You earn while you train and progress to driller as you build competence.

2. Short vocational courses and tickets

Targeted courses run by training providers cover rig operation, safety and the plant tickets you need. Combine these with a CSCS card and an NPORS/CPCS plant card to get on site quickly.

3. FE college course

A college course in construction, civil engineering or a related trade (often a BTEC or NVQ) gives broader technical grounding over 1–2 years. It's slower but useful for complex rigs and for progressing to higher qualifications later.
